EUROPEAN COHORT STUDIES ON WORK AND HEALTH IN AGEING SOCIETIES

EUROPEAN COHORT STUDIES ON WORK AND HEALTH IN AGEING SOCIETIES

The health of the older working population will be crucial for future economic and social development of the ageing societies. Work and health are closely interconnected in both directions. This, however, may be different for older compared to younger workers. Older workers can be expected to be more physically vulnerable; the natural course of health but also long-term exposure to working conditions may become visible and influence work and labour market participation. Consequently, besides the motivation to continue working the older workers’ work ability becomes more and more relevant, i.e. coping with functional limitations at work.

Accordingly, it is necessary to study whether and how working life and labour markets react to the ageing of the workforce and how the older workforce copes with the working and labour market conditions.

This symposium will focus on the association between working conditions and health as well as factors related to transition into retirement. It will further discuss gender specific aspects of these relations.

The aim of this satellite symposium is to connect European cohort studies on work, age and health in order to highlight important research questions arising from demographic transition. Furthermore, it aims at inducing discussions between study groups and scientists. Thus, the symposium addresses scientists with sociological, psychological and epidemiological or public health background.
